Grades 5-8

English Language Arts

Students will learn the core concepts and skills of English Language Arts.  Students will spend time practicing reading and writing strategies that lie within their grade level band of core instructional standards.

Visual & Performing Arts 

Band serves as an introduction or continuation for students to learn to play a band instrument, to develop skills necessary to play beginning-level music accurately with good tone quality, to read musical notation, and to provide performance opportunities.

Guitar serves as an introduction or continuation for students to learn to play the guitar. Students will develop skills necessary to play beginning-level music accurately, to read musical notation, and be provided performance opportunities.

Ceramics will provide students an introduction to clay by learning basic hand building techniques of pinch coil and slab, basic ceramic sculpture construction, and glazing.  More advanced students will get the chance to build upon their existing skills.

Photography provides an introduction to digital photography with the goal to spark the joy of capturing life in pictures. Students will learn basic digital photo quality settings and features.

Drawing/Painting students will learn basic art skills to help support their creative expression. Students will be introduced to basic elements and principles of visual art, such as line, shape/form, space, balance and emphasis. More advanced students will get the chance to build upon their existing skills.

Drama students will participate in theater / drama activities including games, lessons, and exercises to develop stage skills including expression, speaking in front of a group, improvisation, voice projection, pantomime, and singing.  Class will showcase a culminating performance.  (This is a 6-week class – sign up only if you will attend both sessions)

Industrial Arts 

Build your own Skateboard is a class where students get to couple their art and construction skills in order to design, build, and craft their own working skateboard.  Basic materials (wood deck, trucks, wheels) will be provided.  Students wishing to upgrade their parts may do so at their own expense. 

Leadership/Service 

Leadership Academy students will deepen their understanding of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People using the research based, Leader in Me curriculum for younger students. Students will learn about important life skills like goal setting, time management, organization, and personal responsibility while participating in fun games and activities.

 Creek Restoration will be a great option for students who love our natural world and want to make a difference in their home community to help restore habitat in SLO Creek (city) or Chorro Creek (coast).  Students will learn about watershed health and gain hands-on experience in the field to help achieve restoration goals. Hands-on experiences may include installing and using citizen-science tools to measure creek flow, monitoring estuary water quality, and planting native trees and shrubs. Students will also log volunteer hours to include on college or job applications.

Mathematics 

Students will participate in a unique blend of problem solving and skill building activities that reinforce essential mathematical concepts needed for success inside and outside the classroom.

Culinary Arts

The Cooking and Gardening Pilot Class follows a standards-based curriculum for elementary to high school students to explore the interactions between food, culture, health, and the environment through interactive cooking and gardening lessons. At the heart of this dynamic and joyful learning experience, the focus is to educate young students on growing, preparing, and eating healthy food, and empower them to become environmental stewards.

 Students will be introduced to a variety of practical cooking skills and explore connections between foods and culture. Basic kitchen skills will provide a foundation for recipe creation allowing students to taste their work and bring home recipes to share with family.

STEAM 

Intro to Drones will give students a chance to learn about the drone industry and future job opportunities.  Interested students will also have fun designing and building their own drone challenge course.

Coding /Video Game Design will be a class where students get to experience the thrill of coding to design video games through the use of programs such as GoDot, Roblox or Gamestar Mechanic

Digital Media is designed to provide the student with knowledge, skills, and hands-on application in areas of video creation.  Students will learn about script creation, shooting a video, as well as video editing.  They will have the opportunity to submit their movie to be part of a culminating film festival.

Physical Education 

Swimming is designed for students to build on their basic swim skills to develop lifelong fitness! Swim lessons will be offered for students at all levels of ability. 

Pickleball will provide students with an overview of the fundamentals in this unique and increasingly popular paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.  Students will get the chance to apply their skills during game competitions.

 Soccer will provide students with an overview of the fundamentals of this popular world wide sport while giving students of all ability levels a chance to build on their current skills.  Students will get the chance to apply their skills during game competitions.

 Basketball will provide students with an overview of the fundamentals of the sport while giving students of all ability levels a chance to build on their current skills.  Students will get the chance to apply their skills during game competitions.
