Program Overview

The SLCUSD Summer Experience is an innovative approach to traditional Summer School. The district has spent the last 4 years exploring research, best practices, and ways to offer a Summer Program that is engaging for all students. A variety of theme based academic, and enrichment classes are offered, through a flexible attendance schedule.

Students who request classes must commit to attending for the full day (3 classes/day) for 4 weeks (June 12 - July 11) or 6 weeks (June 12 - July 25).

The program is open to current San Luis Coastal kindergarten through 7th grade students.

There is a 2-step process to enroll in Summer Experience.

Step 1: This year's enrollment is based on class requests and will take place using a Google Form, where students will rank order (1st choice, 2nd choice, etc.) which classes they want. Making these requests does not mean you are enrolling in these classes, just informing us about your child's preferences.   Our team will do our best to honor requests for as many students as possible. However, if there is high demand, not every request or every student may be offered a spot in Summer Experience.

Step 2: Families will be contacted in April with their child's schedule and must opt-in using a Google Form to finalize enrollment in Summer Experience.  Your child will not be enrolled unless an opt-in form is submitted by the deadline.  

 Free transportation will be provided in a similar fashion to how it is provided during the school year. Our award-winning SLCUSD Food Service department will provide school meals (snack and lunch) free of charge for all participating students.

Unlike traditional Summer School, the Summer Experience is open to all students, is a full day program, and offers enrichment classes in addition to core academic programs. 

Through Measure D, our high school campuses now have amazing facilities that we want our younger students to enjoy (i.e. swimming pool, theatre). Campus supervision will be provided and interaction between grades 5-8 and 9-12 students will be limited by their daily schedule and location on campus. However, students in grades 5-12 may ride buses together and be placed in particular enrichment classes together.

The Summer Experience is FREE to all participants during the summer of 2025, including costs associated with childcare provided by partner agencies. (Reminder, SLO Parks and Rec will offer care at Bishop's Peak, and CL Smith.  YMCA will offer care at Baywood.  Families who request care will need to finalize enrollment separately, with these agencies in the spring.  In the event that there is high demand for care, TK students with siblings enrolled in Summer Experience will be given priority.)

San Luis Coastal utilizes State funding called ELOP (Expanded Learning Opportunities Program) as its primary funding source to operate the Summer Experience program . This funding source is targeted with an intended use to provide students with additional learning opportunities outside of regular school hours such as after school activities, summer learning, enrichment programs, and childcare.  ELOP funds programs that focus on developing academic, social, and physical needs of students through engaging hands-on experiences that complement learning activities during the regular school day and year.
