Grades 1-4 Course Offerings

Current K - 3rd Graders

All courses offered in Summer Experience fit within one of four pathways.

ACADEMIC / Mathematics, Math in Spanish* and English / Spanish Language Arts:* Grade level instructional standards. These classes are by teacher recommendation, and are for students who have demonstrated academic need during the school year.
Spanish instruction is for 1st and 2nd grade students attending Baywood and Pacheco schools.
 

STEAM / SCIENCE & ENGINEERING: Classes include Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  Integrated hands-on activities to explore Science and Math, as well as computer coding

ARTS / PERFORMING ARTS: Activities include theater, music, and dance with a culminating performance

ARTS / FINE and CULINARY ARTS:  Drawing and Painting activities, as well as an introduction to a variety of practical cooking skills while exploring connections between food, culture, and nutrition

SKILLS / LEADERS IN SPORTS : Interpersonal and citizenship skills, along with physical activities including playground games and sports

As students move through grades, and attend Summer Experience through their years in San Luis Coastal, the skills and learning experiences will build, in classes offered within the same pathway at earlier grades.

We hope to offer all courses listed, however actual classes will depend on student interest and teacher availability.

Fine and Culinary Arts 

Our culinary class follows a standards-based curriculum for elementary to high school students to explore the interactions between food, culture, health, and the environment through interactive cooking and gardening lessons. At the heart of this dynamic and joyful learning experience, the focus is to educate young students on growing, preparing, and eating healthy food, and empower them to become environmental stewards.


In Fine Arts, students practice drawing and painting skills to help support their creative expression. Students will be introduced to basic elements and principles of visual art, such as line, shape/form, space, balance and emphasis. More advanced students will get the chance to build upon their existing artistic strengths.

Performing Arts 

Students will participate in Theater / performance art games, lessons, and exercises to develop stage skills including expression, speaking in front of a group, improvisation, voice projection, pantomime, and singing.  The goal will be to conduct a culminating performance.

STEAM - Coding and Engineering

3rd grade students learn coding skills

Students at all grades will explore science and engineering principles.

Grade 1-2 students will discover the wonders of our oceans, climate, and marine mammals and build with hands-on iInnovate STEM kits.  

 

Science and Engineering

Grade 3-4 students will express their creativity through coding and becoming green energy experts by building with science kits.

 Leaders in Sports

Students are instructed on leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the classroom and beyond. Students learn empathy, goal setting, time management, organization, and personal responsibility. Leadership curriculum will lay the foundation for successful students who participate. 

Sports components of this class will allow students to participate in a variety of games including soccer, basketball, and pickleball.  This is a great course for students who like to be active, and play fun and engaging games.  Fundamental skills of each sport will be covered and students will get to develop their skills in a positive environment emphasizing sportsmanship.

Language Arts

English Language Arts

Students will learn the core concepts and skills of English Language Arts.  Students will spend time practicing reading and writing strategies that lie within their grade level band of core instructional standards. 

Spanish Language Arts

Dual Immersion Spanish Language Arts - This class is for current Baywood and Pacheco Kinder and 1st grade students learning through Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion.

Mathematics

Mathematics -  Students will participate in a unique blend of problem solving and skill building activities that reinforce essential mathematical concepts needed for success inside and outside the classroom.

Dual Immersion Math - This math class will be taught in Spanish and is for current Kinder and 1st grade Baywood and Pacheco students learning through Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion.
