Summer Experience Vision

The SLCUSD Summer Experience will actively engage ALL students, allowing them to learn, grow, and develop, in a flexible, safe, and supportive environment. Participants will be part of a program that they cannot wait to be a part of each year that inspires passion and a love of learning. Students will experience hands-on, highly engaging programs allowing them to employ innovative, creative problem-solving skills to confront real life challenges.

Request-Based Registration

Due to an expected high level of demand and to increase equal access, this year's enrollment will be based on course requests. You will request courses in February with a Google Form, but these requests don't guarantee enrollment. Student preferences will be entered in our computer-based enrollment system, which will generate schedules that honor requests for as many students as possible. All families who submit a Google Form will be emailed in March, to learn whether or not their child was enrolled. Enrolled students will receive their schedules at that time.

What is Summer Experience?

The SLCUSD Summer Experience is an innovative approach to traditional Summer School. The district has spent the last 3 years exploring research, best practices, and ways to offer a Summer Program that is engaging for all students. A variety of theme based academic, and enrichment classes are offered, through a flexible attendance schedule.

Students who request courses must commit to attending for the full day (3 classes/day) for all 6 weeks, June 17 - July 31.

The program is open to current San Luis Coastal kindergarten through 8th grade students.

How Can I Sign Up?

There is a 2-step process to enroll in Summer Experience.

Step 1: This year's enrollment is based on course requests and will take place using a Google Form, where students will rank order (1st choice, 2nd choice, etc.) which classes they want. Making these requests does not mean you are enrolling in these classes, just informing us about your child's preferences. Our team will do our best to honor requests for as many students as possible. However, if there is high demand, not every request or every student may be offered a spot in Summer Experience.

Step 2: Families will be contacted in April with their child's schedule and must opt-in using a Google Form to finalize enrollment in Summer Experience. Your child will not be enrolled unless an opt-in form is submitted by the deadline.

Why will 5th-8th graders be participating at the high school?

Through Measure D, our high school campuses now have amazing facilities that we want our younger students to enjoy (i.e. swimming pool, theatre). Campus supervision will be provided and interaction between grades 5-8 and 9-12 students will be limited by their daily schedule and location on campus. However, students in grades 5-12 may ride buses together and be placed in particular enrichment classes together.

How much does Summer Experience Cost?

The Summer Experience is FREE to all participants during the summer of 2024, including costs associated with childcare provided by partner agencies. (Reminder, SLO Parks and Rec will offer care at Bishop's Peak, and CL Smith. YMCA will offer care at Baywood. Families who request care will need to finalize enrollment separately, with these agencies in the spring. In the event that there is high demand for care, TK students with siblings enrolled in Summer Experience will be given priority.)

Locations

Locations for Grades 1st - 4th grade students are on the coast at Baywood Elementary and 5th -8th graders will attend Morro Bay High School.

In the city of SLO, 1st - 4th grade student will attend Bishop's Peak, & C.L. Smith Elementary and 5th - 8th grade students will attend San Luis Obispo High School.
